There we were, Zigi and I, standing by the White Bridge in the National Trust’s Morden Hall Park wondering how to introduce bug hunting to five eager children from Gorringe Primary School, and Prof. Lin Field, the President of the Royal Entomological Society. There was only one workable solution, to don waders and jump in.

Kick sampling in action

And what fun we had playing our part in this year’s National Insect Week. The sun shone, the kids were fantastic and they learnt a thing or two about kick sampling and the important role it plays in the ongoing recovery of the magnificent Wandle.

Sorting the lovely bugs from the rubbish

So my thanks to Bridget Peacock, Director Riverfly Partnership, for the opportunity, to Chris and Steve from Gorringe Primary School for the loan of their charges and to the National Trust for the use of the park for the demonstration.
