Flyfishing the Wandle can sometimes seem like a Quixotic calling – so Andrew Todd took it to the max when he won his Wander up the Wandle in this year’s Wild Trout Trust charity auction.

“If I’m flyfishing, I only want to fish a dry fly”, he told me on the phone a few days ahead.

“If I want to fish under the surface, I’ll use a proper trotting set-up.”

And he was (almost) as good as his word, only condescending to drop beneath the meniscus when horribly taunted by a huge shoal of chub just above Connolly’s Mill.

I’ll take the moral blame for that.

But wasn’t it worth it… a great day out on the Wandle for a generous benefactor to the Wild Trout Trust, and a promise to come back armed for one of those elusive Wandle trout…
